This railway system’s fascinating history dates back to the establishment of its inaugural branch line between Podanur and Mettupalayam in 1873. This historic event marked the genesis of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway system. Mettupalayam became the foothill terminus of this 26-mile long branch line. The line from Mettupalayam to Coonoor was completed and inaugurated on June 15, 1899, under the supervision of the Madras Railway. Notably, the year 1908 witnessed the commencement of commercial rail traffic between Udagamandalam and Mettupalayam, involving a financial outlay of Rs 24,40,000.

Tracing the Route of Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The 46.61-kilometer-long journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty encompasses nine picturesque stations along its course. These stations include Mettupalayam, Kallar, Hillgrove, Coonoor, Wellington, Aruvangadu, Ketti, Lovedale, and the final destination, Udagamandalam, commonly known as Ooty. The entire route unfolds with approximately 208 curves, 250 bridges, 16 tunnels, and 15 road overbridges/underbridges, offering passengers an enchanting view of the Nilgiri hills.
